Gilroy Garlic Festival

california_gilroy_garlicThey go through 10 tons of beef, four tons of pasta, four tons of calamari, two tons of scampi — and TWO TONS of fresh garlic each year at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. Still, for fanatics, there’s never enough garlic at this California foodie fest, set for July 23 through 25, 2010, in Christmas Hill Park, Gilroy — about 30 miles south of San Jose (this year is its 32nd celebrating Allium sativum). The photo, at left, shows a pyro chef preparing calamari at a previous fest (Photo by Bill Strange).

Fabio Viviani , the star of Bravo Television Network’s “Top Chef” series, will conduct a cooking demonstration on July 24 and host the Garlic Showdown on July 25. The showdown matches four Bay Area cooking professionals in an Iron Chef-style competition on the Festival’s cook-off stage. The contestants will be given a “secret ingredient” and will have two hours to prepare, plate and serve their creations to a select panel of judges.

Admission is $17, and hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day, but you can’t get in after 6 p.m. And, just as a “heads up”, Road Trips Foodies, the Garlic Festival refuses entry or admission to anyone wearing clothing or paraphernalia indicating or signifying membership in a gang, including a motorcycle club.
