Cumbria’s “Taste District” e-Magazine

Lake DistrictYour Road Trips Foodie has never contemplated the cuisine of Cumbria before, but a new e-publication has caused a re-evaluation of that stance. “The Taste District” intends to cover the local foods of the Lake District, a popular summer vacation location for those who live in England and beyond.

It even taught me a new English word: gastravaganza. That’s short for gastronomic extravaganza, of course, and it was used to describe the Low Sizergh Barn Farm Shop, which sells everything you’d ever want to eat, from fresh fruits and vegetables to meats, cakes and drinks. They carry 80 different kinds of cheese (90% of which are British) for example.

Other foodie finds in Cumbria are pork and Blue Stilton sausage, Black Forest wood-smoked back bacon, purple-sprouting broccoli and Maris Piper potatoes. In fact, there are more than 100 farmers’ markets in the Lake District each year, running from January straight through December. There’s a list online. Who knew there was such variety in this corner of the Old Country?
