Abbott’s Candy

Your Road Trips Foodie‘s favorite candy is the caramel, and nobody does ’em better than Abbott’s Candy Shop, 48 East Walnut Street, Hagerstown, Indiana. This east central Indiana town (population 2000) is a few miles north of I-70 (take the Indiana 1 exit, north). You can’t miss the big pink and white building that houses Abbott’s Candy that’s a block south of Main Street (the company was founded here in the 1890s).

First, take the factory tour, which starts in the kitchen where the caramel is poured on the water-cooled table. When the caramel has cooled, each forty pound batch is cut and wrapped by hand. There are approximately 900 pieces per batch, and waxed papers in different colors or patterns distinguish the different flavors of caramels and chews.

Of course they also make chocolates, truffles and toffee, but the caramels are to die for!

Not heading that far east in the Hoosier state? You can find the candies at Abbott’s Also Candy Shop, 3744 East 82nd Street on the northeast side of Indianapolis, or on the southside at 7779 South US 31, Indianapolis, Indiana.
