World Chicken Festival

Submitted by on September 10, 2011 – 12:45 amNo Comment

When you think about it, Road Trips Foodies, where else would the World Chicken Festival be held than in the home state of the colonel?

Yes, folks, the 22nd annual fest will be September 22 through 25, 2011, in Laurel County, Kentucky — where Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, launched his first restaurant in the 1940s, and his nephew, Lee Cummings (who was co-founder of Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken) began his career in 1952.

All the action takes place in downtown London, Kentucky — there’s a complete schedule online.

Don’t miss sampling genuine Kentucky fried chicken from the World’s Largest Stainless Steel Skillet, operated by volunteers who have served more than 120,000 fried chicken dinners since its inauguration in 1992.

Unfortunately the chicken cooking contest won’t be held this year, but the Hot Wing Eating Contest is September 25.

You don’t have to come during the fest to visit the Harland Sanders Museum and Café in Corbin, Kentucky. Visitors are transported back to the ’40s as the restaurant where Kentucky Fried Chicken® got its start, has been carefully restored, and features the kitchen where the Colonel perfected his Original Recipe® chicken.

London and Laurel County have been a crossroads for travelers ever since Daniel Boone led a band of pioneers through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky. Located at the intersection of I-75, the Hal Rogers and Cumberland Parkways, and U.S. 25, London is still a “Traveler’s Crossroads”.
