Drop the Fish?

Don’t drop the ball, “drop the fish” at a unique New Year’s celebration in Port Clinton, Ohio (map).

Yes, Road Trips Foodies, it’s not to late to head on over to northeast Ohio for the annual Walleye Drop set for New Year’s Eve.

On December 31 in Port Clinton — and no where else in the nation — will visitors and locals come together at midnight to watch a 20-foot, 600-pound fish plummet from the sky. (Animal lovers take note: this is a “replica” fish made of fiberglass by Jim Wendt of Jim’s Taxidermy.)

Fortunately, that’s not the only event at the outdoor celebration, with showcases a fresh perch or walleye sandwiches from the Port Clinton Fish Company and glasses of “Walleye White” wine from a local winery.

Festivities commence at 4 p.m. with a variety of free children’s games and an early, kid-friendly rendition of the midnight moment dubbed the “Minnow Drop.” Shortly thereafter the music on the street starts with professional DJ Rock & Roll Express, who encourages you to dance the night away while you check out the local walleye themed street vendors.

Of course the party goes on well after midnight with main stage entertainment and a plethora of fireworks plus live music at The Listening Room.
