Maine Potato Blossom Festival

Submitted by on June 20, 2013 – 8:40 amNo Comment

potatoes2This should be categorized as an almost-food festival! The Maine Potato Blossom Festival will be held July 13 through 21, 2013, in Fort Fairfield, Maine (map).

Why an almost-food festival? That’s because this one is timed to occur each year when the potato blossoms are in full bloom — not when they’re ready to harvest.

Centerpiece for us Road Trips Foodies takes place on July 20: the Potato Cooking Contest. It begins at 10 a.m. in the cafeteria of the Fort Fairfield Elementary School and is sponsored by the Maine Potato Board and Maine Agri Women.

Oh, sure: there also are all the accoutrements of a town festival, including a parade (always on the third Saturday in July), fireworks, river races, antique tractor pull, pet contest — plus something unique: mashed potato wrestling.

If you’re more into Maine lobster, well, there’ll be that option as well. On July 13, 14, 19 and 20, a Lobster and Clam Bake at $43.50 per person will be served at Canterbury Royale, 182 Sam Everett Road, Fort Fairfield, Maine.
