german-sausageGood news, Road Trips Foodies! You don’t need to wait ’til October to sample German sausage, sauerkraut, potato salad and other German specialties.

That’s because there are two editions of the German Sausage Festival in Elberta, Alabama. The first takes place March 29, 2014, and the second on October 25, 2014 (always on the last Saturdays of March and October).

Both take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Elberta Town Park, 13052 Main Street, Elberta, Alabama.

There’ll be 250 arts & crafts booths, carnival rides and continuous entertainment: cloggers, polkas, country music and theBellview Stumpfiddle Band will perform with the North End Stompers.

Hungry? Sample Elberta’s famous German sausage & sauerkraut, plus German-style filled cabbage, potato salad, goulash, red beans & rice, hamburgers, hot dogs, BBQ sandwiches, ice cream, popcorn and peanuts not to mention baked goods.

The sausage festival is a town fund-raiser, first spearheaded by Elberta’s Volunteer Fire Department in 1978. Proceeds are used for improving not only the fire department, but the town as well. Additionally, local non-profit organizations also benefit from the festival through proceeds from their booth sales and parking lot fees.

Although the recipe has changed somewhat over the years, the “original secret recipe” for Elberta’s famous sausage is credited to Alfred Stucki who managed Elberta’s Locker Plant from 1953 until his death in 1973.
